Cast aside

The title for the John McGlashan year 10 exhibition in the grounds of Olveston, ''Invest'', references both the investment casting techniques employed in the production of the relief sculptures, the culture of coins and medallions and the investment made in the students' visual art education.

The large ceramic medallions produced for this exhibition form part of the evidence required for the pupils' submission of work for their level 1 NCEA 1.5 achievement standard.

For this standard the students have researched the historical culture of relief modelling and casting relating to coins and medallions.

They have used this and their own personal history, and family war history, to develop ideas in designing a personal medallion.

The ceramic medallions have been painted to resemble bronze material and will be placed in the gardens at Olveston as if they have been dropped and forgotten, like many other coins.
