A day with no sport on the timetable leaves 14-year-old Phoebe Young feeling restless.

''I get real fidgety,'' the Mount Aspiring College pupil says.

Fortunately, it is a situation she rarely faces, as much of her time before and after school is filled with biking, running, swimming or core-strength training sessions.

A true all-rounder, in the past year she has won either regional or South Island titles in duathlon, triathlon, mountain biking, road cycling, athletics and big mountain skiing.

She came second in the under-14 girls division at the national secondary schools duathlon championship in Taupo in August.

In March, she placed fourth for her age for a second time at the national schools triathlon event in Gisborne and won her age-group at the South Island secondary schools triathlon in Oamaru.

A month earlier, Young became the national under-15 cross-country mountain biking champion in Rotorua and, in March, she won her age-group at the Oceania championships at Mt Hutt.

She has been working hard on her road cycling to enhance her triathlon performance and most recently finished third overall in her age bracket in the Junior Tour of Southland.

Last month, she became the national secondary schools under-15 individual road cycling overall champion in Auckland and, at the same event set a record in the time trial, won the criterion and came second in the hill climb.

Young has also shown great promise in big mountain skiing - winning two free ride events this winter - and in athletics, winning the Otago secondary schools cross-country and the 800m, and finishing second in the 1500m.

Since moving south from Auckland seven years ago, Young and her family have taken full advantage of Wanaka's vast outdoor training ground, including the mountain bike trails in Sticky Forest near their home.

Young often runs or rides with her parents, Ollie and Janet, or older brother Alex (15), and also trains with experienced local coaches including Val Burke, Patrick Harvey and Commonwealth Games medallist Jon Andrews.

Young hopes to become an elite sportswoman one day, but is yet to decide in what sport.

Her favourite ''depends on the season'', she says.

''I'll have to choose ... at some stage but for now I'm going to keep my options open.''
