Pupils find success in many areas

Logan Park High School

Top Otago basketballer Jaren Roy (year 12) has been invited as one of 20 top basketballers to attend the under-17 national selection camp in Auckland in April and to work towards the Oceania championships later this year.

In January, Jaren attended the Junior Breakers (under-17) summer camp in Auckland. He spent four days training with the Breakers development and coaching staff. He was the only Dunedin pupil selected to attend, out of 24 top basketballers from around the country.

Emily Proctor (year 9) has been selected for the Otago under-13 basketball development team, while Joseph Araya (year 10) has been selected to attend the National Football Talent Centre for a week in the April holidays.

At the South Island secondary schools Sunburst regatta last week, Fraser Braid (year 11) and Caitlin Kilner (year 12) sailed all week and won in the silver fleet section.

The senior A girls volleyball team attended the satellite schools tournament in Christchurch last week and had a top-10 finish.

A strong team competed in the Otago-Southland athletics championships. Sophia Barriga (triple jump), Molly Morley (400m and long jump) and Tash Gosling (shot put) all had third placings. These pupils as well as Jacob Gosling have qualified for the South Island secondary schools championships in Nelson.

 

Kaikorai Valley College

Blake Porteous has had an impressive start to the year as a member of the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club. At the Otago senior sand championships in February, Blake was first in under-19 beach flags, long and short course canoe races, and beach relay, second in beach sprints, and third in board race and open beach flags. At the southern region championships in Christchurch, Blake won gold medals in under-19 beach flags and long and short course canoe races and a bronze in beach relay. At the national championships, Blake won bronze medals in both the under-19 short and long course canoe races and finished 11th in beach flags out of 62 competitors.

Six Kaikorai Valley pupils were members of the Onyx Militaires marching teams which travelled to Christchurch last month for the New Zealand championships. Cassara Keen, Sarah Broad and Tessa Brownlie were in the under-12 grade which was third in technical and champion and fourth in display. Jessica Brownlie, Demi Thompson and Grace Campbell were in the under-16 grade which came fifth.

The softball team is the overall champion after winning the pre-Christmas and post-Christmas secondary schools slow pitch competitions.

 

Otago Girls' High School

Karley Wilden-Palms and Juliette Lequeux reached the final of the under-18 double sculls at the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro. They came a creditable fourth in the final.

At the Otago-Southland secondary schools athletic championships, the following girls were placed: Taylor Thorne (first, U15 high jump), Thalia Roome (second, U14 1500m), Jenna Thorne (second, U15 3000m), Sydney Evans-Tobata (third, senior 200m), Storm Maole (second, U14 javelin and hammer), Gemma Millar (first, U15 hammer) and Esmae Knox (third, senior hammer). Storm Maole then placed third in under-14 shot put at the South Island championships in Nelson.

Molley Hickey, Sophie Dijkstra and Tayla MacDonald were selected for the Otago schools cricket team, and Kiana Pelasio was selected to trial for the New Zealand schools netball team.

Emma Ward won a silver medal in the youth 4 x 100m relay at the national athletics championships in Wellington, and the senior A volleyball team beat St Hilda's to win the Otago championships.

The water polo team placed fourth at the South Island championships, and year 12 pupils Charlotte Becconsall-Ryan and Rebecca McNaughton competed in the New Zealand IRB championships at Warrington last weekend.

 

Taieri College

Hannah Ashton, Hamish Mears, Matt Crammond and Bradley Tarleton produced winning performances at the Otago athletics championships, and Hannah and Hamish each broke three records. The team performed exceptionally well at the Otago-Southland event, with Hamish breaking the under-14 discus record and Bradley continuing his dominance of the hammer throw with another record. Hannah also had wins in the high jump and sprints along with the under-14 girls relay team.

Joshua Hastie and Maigan Fright made Otago under-15 softball teams, and Riley Dixon and Hayden Walker made the Dunedin under-15 cricket team.

Aiden Nichol and Jacob Woodcock (under-15 boys), Jake McLeod and Ben McKinley (under- 17 boys), Kaylee Bezett (under-17 girls) and Gemma Bonney (under-19 girls) made Otago basketball teams.

Taieri College hosted South Otago High School for the annual summer sport interchange. South Otago won the touch and theatre sports and Taieri College won cricket. The tennis and multisport were drawn.

At the South Island secondary schools triathlon and duathlon championships, Vicky Clark came third in the senior girls race.

 

Bayfield High School

Ben Hayward competed in the South Island surf life-saving championships, placing first in the relay and second in the sprint.

Elle Cuthbert was second at the gruelling South Island secondary schools duathlon held in Oamaru last month.

Talented mountain biker Shannon Hope continues to produce top performances. Shannon placed first in the New Zealand secondary schools championships in the cross-country, second in the downhill and first in the short-course sprint. Shannon was the overall winner in the under-20 girls section, and has also raced in the Oceania championships in Australia, placing second in cross-country. She recently competed in the Motatapu race, placing first in the junior competition and third overall in the open women's event.

Bayfield entered five boats in the South Island secondary schools Sunburst regatta. Kaya Reese and Emma Fleury were third overall, an outstanding result for a year 9 skipper.

Bayfield achieved fine results in the Otago-Southland athletics championships. Caitlin Farry was eighth in the under-14 girls javelin, Sarah McLennan eighth in under-14 girls triple jump and fifth in high jump, and Aaron Anderson fourth in senior boys 1500m and 3000m.

 

John McGlashan College

Weightlifter Josh Homersham is on target to attend the Youth Commonwealth Games later this year. If he maintains his No 1 ranking in the 77kg youth class, he will surely achieve his goal In the recent Head of the Harbour regatta, the McGlashan rowing squad won the George Thorn trophy. It was the first time in 46 years that a school other than Otago Boys' had won this trophy. The 13-man Maadi Cup squad had reached four A finals and four B finals.

The McGlashan tennis team finished fourth at the national secondary schools championships in Wellington. Playing Christ's College for third place, the match was in the balance at 3-2 after the singles and one doubles match. The tie came down to a super tie break in the second doubles match.

The First XI finished second in the Gillette Cup. After beating Southland Boys' and then Waitaki in the semifinals, McGlashan came up short against Otago Boys' in the final.

In the recent Otago-Southland athletics championships, the boys had six first placings. Oli Chignell won the senior 1500m and 3000m, Johnny Baker won the under-14 100 and 400m, and Nico Bowering won the 200m. The under-14 relay team also had a win.

 

Roxburgh Area School

Roxburgh had six pupils compete at the Otago-Southland athletics championships in Invercargill. Lauren Kitto (under-15 triple jump) and Toby Grice (senior boys triple jump) qualified to attend the South Island championships, but due to distance (Nelson) will focus on attending the New Zealand championships in December.

Ethan Kitto and Tiaan McKinnel won the South Island secondary schools bowls tournament held recently in Southland and are training for the next level of competition.

Jonty McKinnel was third in the Roxburgh Dam to Beaumont race, and Tiaan McKinnel and Alex Darling were fifth-equal in the under-19 section.

The team of Jonty McKinnel, Tiaan McKinnel, Jess Moore and Jack Lennon was third in the South Island adventure race in Cromwell.

 

St Hilda's Collegiate

Anna Lindsay has been selected in the New Zealand 16-19 year triathlon team to compete at the world grand final series. Anna won the South Island secondary schools under-19 triathlon race and competed at the national schools event.

Annabel Evans has continued her great form by winning the Otago intercollegiate golf tournament in a playoff. This followed on from her winning the best nett at the South Island strokeplay over 72 holes at St Clair the week before.

The St Hilda's water polo team won the South Island secondary schools tournament. Libby van Harselaar was named MVP and Charlotte Cotter was named in the tournament team.

The First XI cricket team won the NZCT southern regional final by 90 runs. Blue Mountain won the toss and asked St Hilda's to bat. Bella James and Aisling Beamish put together a solid opening stand of 59 before Bella was out for 26. Aisling carried on to score 37 before being run out, and Annabel Girvan added 23 not out as St Hilda's scored 129 for five off its 20 overs.

In reply, Blue Mountain was soon under pressure from an excellent opening bowling effort by Georgia and Kate Heffernan. Sarah Wyber (three for eight off three overs) and Kate Heffernan (two for eight off four) were the most successful bowlers for St Hilda's as Blue Mountain was dismissed for 39. St Hilda's will now represent the Otago region in the NZCT finals in December.

 

Dunstan High School

Dunstan sent a strong rowing squad to the Maadi Cup in Hamilton, where it performed well following a successful South Island secondary schools regatta.

The kayaking squad also travelled to the North Island where it competed in the New Zealand secondary schools championships. The kayakers headed away with plenty of confidence after good recent performances at the national freestyle championships, where they picked up four golds, three silvers and a bronze. In addition, three members of the squad were selected for the national junior team.

The athletics team concluded the season by competing in both the Otago and Otago-Southland secondary schools events. The squad will now take a break before coming together again to prepare for the national championships in term four.

The boys softball team has also been on the road as it competed in the South Island division two championships in Dunedin.
