Dunstan's nine teams to tournaments show spirit

Dunstan High School

This year, the school sent nine teams, the most in many years, to various tournaments around the South Island.

The boys football team finished near the bottom of the table, although it is a young team with a promising future.

The same can be said for the girls who finished ninth overall but have some strong younger players coming through the ranks.

Senior A netball competed in the SISS tournament and finished 20th overall, which is the best result the team has had for a few years.

The boys basketball A team put in some convincing performances and finished fourth place overall.

The same can be said of the under-15 rugby team, which punched above its weight and had some good wins.

It finished in sixth place.

The ice hockey team moved up to division one this year and finished at the bottom of the table, although players had a win over the top team in division two.

The curling team performed well in the SISS curling champs.

The boys and girls hockey teams played very well during the week.

They both finished in third place and were unlucky not to make finals after some strong performances in pool play.

Logan Park High School

Jonty Horwell is the 2015 New Zealand secondary schools indoor bowls singles champion.

He competed in the secondary schools tournament and in the final he defeated Jason Gray, from Southland Boys' High School, 12-6.

Sean Hall and Jonty also competed in the pairs section and played well but were defeated in the semifinals.

Other teams to compete during the tournament week were the hockey boys and girls teams and football boys team.

The young teams found the competitive experience valuable and are looking forward to next year.

Logan Park High School competed in the Otago Southland regional Get to Go Challenge and found the team's training in sea kayaking on the water with the Otago Polytechnic Sports Institute useful preparation.

Abby Barton, Annie Kennedy Atchison, Mary Locker, Zoe Degas, Joseph Dewhirst, Jim Pearson, Theo Molteno and Calum Roger competed as a junior mixed team.

The winners will compete in the national finals at Great Barrier Island.

The water polo trials were held on Sunday with a lot of competition for team places.

Futsal and volleyball competitions have started, and they are looking forward to the touch and tennis competitions starting next term.

The Blues assembly celebrations take place tomorrow and it will be great to see national representatives (including title holders) and regional representatives recognised across a range of codes from athletics to fencing.

In the latest sports exchange, pupils are looking forward to some transtasman rivalry and robust competition against Kingaroy College from Australia next week.

Teams will compete in touch, futsal, volleyball and the dodgeball.

John McGlashan College

Winter sports have come to an end with the annual school sports tournament.

JMC had seven teams competing all over the country in a variety of sports.

Best-performed sports were hockey and football.

The senior hockey side won qualification into the India Rankin Cup after placing second in their tournament at Gore.

It has taken three years for the team to regain entry into the top ranks of New Zealand hockey.

The JMC football side had an equally successful tournament.

Getting through to the final unbeaten, they went down to a very good Kavanagh side in an exciting final 3-2.

Junior sides travelled to Hamilton and Nelson and competed in basketball, rugby and hockey.

Riley Hall has been selected to represent New Zealand in karate.

The 13-year-old has been selected to compete in the world champs in Auckland.

Riley will compete in the Kata discipline, age division 14/15.

Oli Chignell has returned from representing New Zealand in the Australia cross-country.

Oli placed 15th in the individual race while his team achieved fourth in the relay.

The JMC No 1 team won the novice grade of the local curling competition.

The younger JMC No 3 team turned the tables in the South Island event, placing third in the open grade.

Otago Girls' High School

Last week was a celebration of the success of the sportswomen at Otago Girls' High School with the annual sports awards evening where they recognised: juniors in a senior team, student coaches and referees, five years' participation, and outstanding achievement, along with presenting sports blues.

The school was delighted to have elite swimmer and Otago Girls' ex-girl Kate Godfrey as the guest speaker at this special event.

Otago Girls' is very pleased with the successes at tournament week.

The football team beat Middleton Grange 1-0 in the South Island final and Thalia Roome was voted the most valuable player by opposition teams.

The curlers won the girls' division of the South Island curling championships when they defeated Maniototo Area School in a nerve-racking and very close final.

The outcome was decided with the very last stone delivered by Emma Sutherland from Otago Girls'.

The senior A netball team retained its place in the A grade at the senior South Island secondary schools netball tournament in Timaru, and the senior A hockey side was placed fifth at the Audrey Timlin memorial tournament in Invercargill.

The basketballers were placed 13th out of 16 teams at the AA south zone qualifying tournament held in Dunedin.

The rock climbers travelled to Christchurch for the South Island secondary schools rockclimbing competition held at the YMCA Roxx climbing centre in Christchurch.

Two teams of four competed against tough competition from local Christchurch schools. Erin Knox was awarded a brand new Vaude pack for best belayer.

The school is also proud of year 12 hockey player Mira Neuman, who has been appointed to umpire at the Collier Trophy tournament in Palmerston North.

St Hildas's Collegiate School

The St Hilda's senior and junior basketball teams have had a very successful season.

Both of the teams went through the Dunedin competition unbeaten, and competed at the South Island secondary schools tournament in tournament week.

The junior team had good wins during the tournament, playing Rangi Ruru in the semi and then Ashburton College in a tough final, eventually winning 72-50. This was the third year in a row St Hilda's has won this tournament.

The senior team took until the third quarter to pull away from Christchurch Girls in the final of the South Island tournament that was held in Dunedin, eventually winning 75 - 56.

The side now travels to Palmerston North in the holidays to play at the national tournament.

The St Hilda's A Netball team continued on with its good form at the South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament finishing ninth in A grade.

The only two losses during the week were to St Margaret's and Cashmere, which were the eventual finalists at the tournament.

Georgia Heffernan was rewarded by being named in the tournament team.

During the Dunedin season, the team won premier C and then premier B, and after winning the promotion game, will start 2016 in A grade.

Cecilia Crooks has had a lot of success at recent swimming meets.

At the New Zealand short course championships, she won a silver medal in the 14-year-old 800m freestyle and was a member of the 4x200m under-15 girls relay team, which won a bronze medal.

Cecilia has now been selected to represent New Zealand at the short course swimming championships in Canberra from September 23 to September 28.

Congratulations to the St Hilda's rugby sevens senior team.

After winning the 1st XV competition in term two, one senior and two junior teams played the shorter format of the game as a way to introduce new players to the game.

All of the teams performed well, and after a very close game against Columba College, the senior team won the final.

Roxburgh Area School

In senior netball, both the A and B teams won their final competitions in the Central Otago competition.

The A team won the Wahrlich Cup and the B team won the Tosh Cup. A very positive end to the season.

The A team was very pleased to win all pool games and end up top of its pool.

This meant they were playing off for first to 16th place.

The next round of games was harder, coming up against Aparima College, which ended up in the final.

After beating Timaru Girls' in the morning, the side had a close game, losing by one goal to Darfield High School.

This meant the side ended in 10th place, which was an improvement from last year's placing of 13th.

With only Amelia Pasco and Briana Forbes heading to tertiary study next year, the team is well placed to prepare for next year's tournament.

Unfortunately, we also farewell Trudie Marsh, who has been coaching the team for the past seven years.

Her contribution has been invaluable to the team, teaching fantastic netball skills and strategies, and making netball fun.

Josh Murray played in the under-15 rugby tournament in Nelson as part of the Dunstan High School team.

It was placed sixth in the top section.

Four teams are preparing for the Central Otago volleyball competition to be held in the last week of term.

This should provide valuable game experience for these teams.
