From running to rugby, it was all action at Kaikorai
Valley College yesterday.
To increase sporting participation at the school, a sports
day was held.
All of the school's 760 pupils were able to try their hand at
20 different sports from rowing to rugby, petanque to
mountain biking.
The brainchild of teacher Neil Mackenzie, the idea was to get
pupils to try as many sports as possible and maybe take one
of them up.
The day started with a 1km run along Kaikorai Valley Rd for
all pupils.
The school has one of the lowest participation rates of
pupils in sport, which is a marked difference from the 1980s
when its teams dominated in rugby and cricket.
School sports co-ordinator Theresa Johnson said the day had
been a great success with pupils enjoying a wide range of
sports.
She said the onus was now on pupils to play sport.
She said more years 7 to 8 pupils were playing sport so
progress was being made and would hopefully work through the
school.
