The second day of the Dunedin City Council's spatial plan
hearings again brought more than 30 submitters with a diverse
range of opinions to the council table.
Dunedin city councillors took in their first days of a
week-long hearing on the future of the city yesterday, the
first 30 or so residents giving their thoughts on a draft
spatial plan.
Dunedin City Council critic Lyndon Weggery has called for the
city to reduce its annual $3.7 million funding of the Otago
Museum, claiming that would be the best way to force change
at the institution.
Students opposed to a permanent liquor ban in North Dunedin
say the street drinking culture is "one of the main
attractions" of studying at Otago University.
A Dunedin city councillor subdividing his Mosgiel property
has drawn on his local-body experience to try to reduce
neighbourly tensions among residents.
While the Dunedin City Council has to watch its pennies as it
tries to rein in every possible cost and earn every possible
dollar, the proposal to charge for charity sausage sizzles
was an idea with little merit.
It will cost the Dunedin City Council at least $20,000 to
provide community groups with a similar level of access to
facilities, such as the Skeggs Gallery, as they had before
the recent change of management.
Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull has said he will not be "mucking
around" after holding talks with the head of a residents'
group claiming homes are threatened by erosion at Te Rauone
Beach, on the Otago Peninsula.
