The discussion on whether rodeos should continue to be
allowed to be held on Dunedin City Council land is likely to
be taken to the next level.
The International Rodeo could be barred from returning to
Forsyth Barr Stadium if the Dunedin City Council agrees to a
plea from animal rights group Safe.
Riding bucking bulls and broncos is pretty nerve-racking at
the best of times, but at the Waimate Rodeo yesterday Oamaru
teenager Hayden Tisdall also had the added pressure of riding
in front of a home crowd and living up to a family tradition.
Palmerston steer rider Sam Church has managed to get halfway
to competing in a transtasman rodeo competition, thanks to a
$1000 donation from a former barrel racer.
It has been a tough year for the Church family, but a
highlight has been Sam Church's selection to represent New
Zealand in steer riding.
In November, the country comes to town in all its western
finery for the International Rodeo. Shane Gilchrist discusses
broncos, bulls and a few bucks with those in the know.
Rodeo is not a sport offered pupils at St Hilda's Collegiate
School. It is doubtful if it is encouraged at any girls
school in New Zealand.
Hundreds of people gathered in Lawrence yesterday for the
Wairere South Romneys National Finals Rodeo, which began in
the afternoon with the first of three go-rounds.
Turangi horsewoman Cheyenne Church has shown it is in the
genes when it comes to rodeo.
New Zealand barrel racing champion Angie Perkins, of Wanaka,
was thrilled to win her event in front of a large and
supportive home crowd at Wanaka Rodeo's new arena yesterday.
