Chrome updates cut off for some users

For those using Chrome on Windows XP, Vista and some older Mac systems, the end is nigh.

Google will end its support for the browser on those systems in April, meaning the browser will still function but updates and security fixes will not be applied.

The move was announced in a post on the browser's blog, which said support would cease for Windows XP and Vista and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, as they were no longer being actively supported by their makers.

"Such older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware," Director of Engineering and Early Notifier Marc Pawliger said in the post.

For XP, the April deadline represents yet another stay of execution.

Google was initially going to end support for Chrome on XP in April 2014, when Microsoft stopped supporting the operating system.

However, support for Chrome on XP was extended to April 2015, then to December 2015, and now to April 2016.

Last month, XP had a market share of more than 11%, according Net Applications. Vista had 1.74% and the three OS X versions had a combined 1.17%.
