Toowoomba starts burials

The first of those killed in Toowoomba's appalling flash flood will be buried today.

Mother and son - Donna Rice, 43, and Jordan, 13 - were swept from the roof of their car in the CBD when their rescue rope snapped under pressure as a wall of water that raged through the city, west of Brisbane, on January 10.

They insisted the youngest brother Blake was rescued first, and the 10-year-old will now help bury his family.

Ms Rice's partner John Tyson said the two will be buried together, Jordan on top of his mother.

"It's symbolic of him being in his mother's arms," Mr Tyson told The Courier Mail.

"There's no way Donna would have let one of her kids go by himself.

"If there is only one bit of comfort I can take out of the whole situation, it is that neither of them will be alone."

A graveside service will be held at Toowoomba's main cemetery.

Another 18 people were killed, and a further 12 are still missing, from the flash flood that hit Toowoomba and surged into the Lockyer Valley.
