White House stands by contraceptives rule

US President Barack Obama is determined to implement a controversial new rule on contraceptives in a way that ensures women have access to birth control while also seeking to allay concerns of opponents of the measure, the White House says.

"He's sensitive to some of the concerns expressed by religious groups," Obama's spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

He reiterated that the administration was willing to work with critics of the rule but gave no sign that it was backing down on the issue.
