One person is dead after a mid-air collision between a civilian Learjet plane and a German air force Eurofighter jet in western Germany.

The Learjet came down in woodland near the town of Olsberg, BBC reports.

German media reported that two Eurofighter jets were operating in the area and that there had been "contact" with the Learjet.

Both fighter planes landed safely, although the one involved in the collision was reportedly badly damaged.

Die Welt news website said the Learjet was also taking part in the exercise.

Firefighters found wreckage of the Learjet, with body parts of one person nearby.

Olsberg lies in the Ruhr Valley, in North-Rhine Westphalia state.
