A fireworks display intended to show students at a Steiner
school the effect of combustion, has started a large bushfire
which forced the evacuation of homes on Queensland's Sunshine
Coast.
Noosa Pengari Steiner School principal Janet Molloy says the
display for Year Seven students was conducted on Thursday
morning by a licensed contractor.
"As soon as the accident occurred all emergency services were
contacted and the school's safety procedures successfully
activated," she said in a statement.
"We were in constant contact with the authorities during the
day."
People living along nearby Grays Road in the township of
Doonan, south of Noosa, were evacuated at the height of the
drama.
No homes were damaged but a disused caravan was destroyed.
The blaze was burning safely on Thursday night and homes were
no longer under threat.
