Elderly man stabbed by burglar

An elderly man has been stabbed in the face with a screwdriver in a cowardly attack by a burglar who was ransacking his Malvern home.

Police in Melbourne say the 82-year-old man was home alone when he heard someone force their way into his Burke Road property around 6am (local time) on Tuesday.

When confronted by the elderly man, the burglar tied a bag over the man's head, punched him several times and then stabbed him in the face with a screwdriver.

He made the homeowner sit down with the bag over his head then continued rummaging through the house fleeing with a small amount of cash and a mobile phone.

The elderly man was found by a relative and taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

His attacker is described as Caucasian and around 177cm tall.

Detectives from Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit will set up an information caravan today from 5.30am at the intersection of Burke Road and Davies Street.

They hope anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time will speak to investigators.
