Police say more arrests are likely after they charged a
former social worker with abusing two teenage boys at a
homeless shelter in Sydney's Kings Cross district during the
1980s.
The Homeless Children's Association at Darlinghurst operated
between May 1981 and July 1983.
Hundreds of homeless children from the area took refuge there
and a number of them were the alleged victims of sexual
abuse, police say.
Sex Crimes squad commander John Kerlatec said todays arrest
may be the first of others associated with the homeless
shelter.
"Further arrests are highly likely," detective superintendent
Kerlatec told reporters in Sydney.
"Certainly, we can't discount the fact there are more
victims."
Police charged the 67-year-old man with two counts of
buggery, three counts of indecent assault on teenage boys,
and possessing and distributing child pornography.
The charges relate to the sexual abuse of two boys aged
between 14 and 17 who spent time at the shelter.
The alleged victims have also provided a substantial amount
of information.
"These children were vulnerable, and sadly they were abused,"
Det Supt Kerlatec said.
"If we can encourage other victims to come forward ... we'd
certainly be keen to talk to those people."
