A West Australian man has been charged with killing a retired
couple in a remote part of southern Tasmania.
A phone call prompted police to visit a property in Mountain
River, south of Hobart, where two bodies were found about 1am
(local time) today.
The couple, a 69-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman, appear
to have suffered severe head injuries, police say.
The pair moved from Western Australia to Tasmania when they
retired several years ago.
Police arrested a 27-year-old man at the scene and charged
him with two counts of murder.
The man is also from Western Australia and had only arrived
in Tasmania a few days ago.
It's believed he knew the couple.
Next of kin have not yet been notified.
"It's just one of those tragic situations, unfortunately,"
said Detective Inspector Peter Powell.
He says police are still trying to establish a possible
motive for the crime.
