A man has died after jumping into a river in Sydney's west to
escape police who were chasing him on foot.
Officers were patrolling the Ermington area when they stopped
a taxi about 4.20am (AEDT) on Thursday.
Two passengers, a man and woman, then ran out of the car,
police said.
The man was chased by police and he jumped into the
Parramatta River, where his body was discovered a short time
later.
A critical-incident investigation has been launched and and
it will investigate all circumstances surrounding the
incident and report to the coroner, police said.
The investigation will be overseen by the Professional
Standards Command.
