A man has been fatally shot by police in Melbourne.
A highway patrol officer stopped a vehicle with suspected
stolen number plates shortly before the incident, around
10.40 (AEST) on Sunday at Windsor, in the city's southeast,
Victoria Police said in a statement.
The officer was in the process of arresting the driver when
he produced a knife.
As a result, the officer discharged his gun, killing the man,
who is believed to have been aged in his 40s.
Police are currently searching for a woman thought also to
have been in the car.
Homicide squad detectives and the professional standards
command are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
