A police officer is undergoing surgery after being shot in
the face while investigating an armed hold-up on the Gold
Two suspects were also shot after the dog squad officer was
struck in the cheek by a bullet during the exchange, which
followed a robbery at the Arundel Tavern at Parkwood early on
The policeman is in a serious condition but is expected to
live, while both other men are under guard in hospital with
foot and leg wounds.

It's understood the suspects fled the tavern via a nearby
reserve after the hold-up about 1.20am and took refuge in a
suburban street for up to two hours before shots rang out.
The injured officer was a senior member of the dog squad
called in to search for the robbers.
One woman, who lives across the road from the Napper Street
reserve, told AAP her daughter was woken up by the sound of
between six and 10 gunshots about 3am.
At least five of the shots happened in rapid succession, said
the woman who did not want to be named.
She said they saw a police four-wheel drive ram a fence at

Another resident, who didn't want to be named, told AAP he'd
heard "about five" shots go in quick succession before a few
more sporadic shots later.
Chief Superintendent Stephen Hollands has told reporters the
officer, aged in his mid-40s, will live.
"The officer is ok. The injuries are not life threatening ...
but we are still very concerned about him," he said.
Police Minister Jack Dempsey said it was a shocking event.
"Any attack on a police officer is an attack on the entire
community," he told AAP.
"This is an unfortunate reminder of the dangerous work police
officers undertake every day.
"My thoughts are with the police officer involved in the
incident, his family and his colleagues."
The shooting happened on the same day two other people will
be sentenced over the murder of Gold Coast detective Damian
Leeding during a hold-up at the Pacific Pines Tavern in May,
