Australian soldier killed in Syria

An Australian soldier has reportedly been killed while fighting with rebels in Syria.

The infantry soldier died two months ago after he travelled to Syria to fight against the war-torn country's regime, the ABC reports.

The Australian Defence Force directed inquiries about the man's death to the attorney-general and Australian Federal Police, who have not yet confirmed the report.

It's unclear whether the man was a reservist or a full-time soldier.

He's believed to be the first serving member of a Western army to be killed while fighting with the rebels.

Several Australians have already been killed in Syria while providing humanitarian aid or fighting with rebel groups.

Sydney man Yusuf Ali and his young wife Amira were reportedly killed during fighting between rebel factions near Aleppo in January.
