Murderer on the run from Sydney prison

A convicted murderer is on the run after failing to return to a Sydney jail following work release.

Mark Whaley, 45, has served 22 years of a 26-year sentence at Parklea prison for murder and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He left jail at 4am on Friday for work release duties at Kirrawee, but failed to return in the afternoon.

Whaley was last seen at Kirrawee about 3.30pm.

He is described as being Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, about 175cm tall with a solid build and brown hair.

He has brown eyes and was last seen wearing a high visibility yellow shirt and blue work shorts.
