Rock climber plunges to his death

A Victorian rock climber has died after falling from a cliff in South Australia.

Police say the man fell to his death while climbing at Upalinna, 40km north of Hawker in the Flinders Ranges, on Thursday afternoon.

The man had been with other rock climbers at a well known site on the southeastern corner of Wilpena Pound when he fell about 50 metres onto a ledge.

Police will fly to Hawker on Friday morning to retrieve the man's body and prepare a report for the coroner.

Next of kin have yet to be notified.
