Man 'too drunk' to remember alleged murder

A man accused of murdering a woman and torching the house she was in can't remember the night's events because he was drunk, a court has heard.

Andrew Sumpton has pleaded not guilty to murdering Michelle Roberts in South Grafton on the NSW north coast in May 2012.

He is also accused of setting a two-bedroom housing-commission home on fire and lighting Ms Roberts' clothing, TV and bedding ablaze.

Ms Robert's body was found in the home after the fire was extinguished.

Sumpton pleaded not guilty to the charges in the NSW Supreme Court yesterday.

His lawyer told the court Sumpton was drunk and had "little recollection of the evening itself".

Sumpton will face trial in the Grafton Supreme Court on September 22.
