Police crack down on Sydney pedestrians

Police have issued nearly 500 pedestrian infringements notices during a 12-hour period in Sydney and Parramatta CBDs.

The notices were the result of a police operation on Friday, targeting dangerous motorist and pedestrian behaviour.

Police issued 495 pedestrians infringement notices for offences such as crossing against the traffic lights.

Officers also handed out 15 notices to drivers for intersection offences, as well as 236 cautions and four seat-belt violations.

Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said police were stunned with the operation's outcome.

"There have been 29 pedestrians killed so far this year and these results show that people are continuing to disregard the law and risk their lives and the safety of others," he said.

"Pedestrians are road users too, and these operations remind them to follow the rules and stay safe when walking in high-traffic areas."
