Canberra memorial for MH17 victims

Australian politicians and foreign diplomats are expected at a memorial service in Canberra to remember victims of the MH17 crash.

The public service at St Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Saturday will be a short but fitting memorial, Father Michael Solomko said.

"It is our Ukrainian Orthodox tradition that we pray for the souls of our loved ones for a period of 40 days," he told AAP.

The world continues to mourn more than a week after the Malaysia Airlines passenger jet was shot down over eastern Ukraine killing all 298 people on board.

Up to 39 Australian citizens and residents are among those killed.
