Murder charge after death at Adelaide hospital

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a fellow patient in a mental health ward at an Adelaide hospital.

About 1am (local time) yesterday, a nurse doing her rounds at the 20-bed Morier Ward at the Noarlunga Hospital found a 43-year-old man collapsed and staff were unable to revive him.

Police say another patient of the acute psychiatric ward was arrested by detectives on suspicion of murder.

The 23-year-old man from Woodcroft was interviewed and later charged with the crime.

He is expected to appear at Christies Beach Magistrates Court today.

Health Minister Jack Snelling said there would be an internal investigation into the incident led by the department's chief psychiatrist.

The minister said he was advised all relevant protocols had been followed.

"We have about 8000 patient interactions across our health system every single day," he told reporters.

"These sorts of incidents are incredibly rare. I've got enormous confidence in our health system and in our doctors and nurses to appropriately care for patients and ensure that they're safe."

Southern Adelaide Local Health Network chief executive Belinda Moyes said the incident occurred in a contained unit and would not affect the hospital's wider operations.

Staff and patients have been briefed about the situation and offered counselling.
