A man has been charged with murder over the death of a fellow
patient in a mental health ward at an Adelaide hospital.
About 1am (local time) yesterday, a nurse doing her rounds at
the 20-bed Morier Ward at the Noarlunga Hospital found a
43-year-old man collapsed and staff were unable to revive
Police say another patient of the acute psychiatric ward was
arrested by detectives on suspicion of murder.
The 23-year-old man from Woodcroft was interviewed and later
charged with the crime.
He is expected to appear at Christies Beach Magistrates Court
Health Minister Jack Snelling said there would be an internal
investigation into the incident led by the department's chief
The minister said he was advised all relevant protocols had
"We have about 8000 patient interactions across our health
system every single day," he told reporters.
"These sorts of incidents are incredibly rare. I've got
enormous confidence in our health system and in our doctors
and nurses to appropriately care for patients and ensure that

Belinda Moyes said the incident occurred in a contained unit
and would not affect the hospital's wider operations.
