NSW 'double murder' spooks neighbour

A man says he feared for his safety when he learned of a suspected double murder just hundreds of metres from his southern Riverina home.

A man and woman were found shot dead in a car on the outskirts of the border town of Moama on Wednesday morning.

The home owner, who asked not to be named, said he knew nothing of the shootings until a friend phoned to check he was OK.

"I had hundreds of calls yesterday because people know I live here," he said.

"It was scary to hear someone was shot so close.

"At least I can get out my front gate today. Yesterday I couldn't get out and the local coppers couldn't tell me anything."

Police have established a special strike force, Operation Kennedia, to investigate the deaths.

The bodies were found beside Old Deniliquin Road, an isolated stretch of unsealed road a few kilometres north of Moama.

No weapon was found and the gunman remains at large.

Police have not formally identified the dead pair but it's believed they were aged in their 30s and lived in Echuca, just across the Murray River in Victoria.
