Melbourne hospital evacuated after leak

Patients are being moved and surgeries cancelled after a burst pipe flooded three floors of Melbourne's Epworth Freemasons Hospital.

A spokeswoman said the pipe burst in the construction zone on the roof of the hospital which is being redeveloped.

Flooded areas have been mopped up, but elevators are still not operational, she said.

Patients will be transferred to other Epworth hospitals including Epworth Richmond and Epworth Camberwell as a precaution.

The spokeswoman said transferring all patients could take up to four hours.

"Surgery at this site will be cancelled for tomorrow and arrangements made for day surgery to take place at other Epworth hospitals," she spokeswoman told AAP.

Earlier on Sunday, four patients were moved to another hospital while others were moved to dry areas at the Clarendon Street site.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews rushed to the hospital and helped with the clean-up.

Police also blocked roads alongside the hospital.
