Bishop child sex case back in court

The case of a Catholic bishop charged with historic child sex offences is set for a return to court in Perth.

The head of the Catholic Church's military diocese, Bishop Max Leroy Davis, has been charged with three counts of indecently dealing with a 13-year-old boy in 1969 while teaching at St Benedict's College in New Norcia, northeast of Perth.

The 68-year-old, who now lives in Canberra, is not required to appear in person but continues to report to Belconnen Police Station as part of his bail undertakings.

He has also stood aside from his duties while the matter is being dealt with.

It is understood Davis is the first Australian bishop and most senior Australian church official to be charged with a child sex offence.

He was not an ordained priest at the time of the alleged offences.

The matter is scheduled to be heard in Perth Magistrates Court today.

Davis' lawyer has previously indicated he intends pleading not guilty.
