Man accused of leaving poison for homeless

A jury will soon begin deliberations on whether a Townsville council worker deliberately left bottles laced with chemicals in a local park to poison homeless people.

Neville Douglas Welsh is accused of leaving iced coffee bottles filled with methylated spirits and weed killer around Dean Park, ABC Radio reports.

At the time, he was employed by the Townsville City Council as a street cleaner.

It's understood a group of homeless people were known to congregate in the area.

Two co-workers say they saw Welsh leaving the bottles behind, the Townsville District Court has heard.

Another said Welsh told them the concoction was medicine to make the "parkies" ill.

The 65-year-old has pleaded not guilty to attempting to injure by noxious substance.

His lawyer says he left the bottles by accident, and there's no proof they were ever taken from the site.

A jury is expected to retire today to consider if the Townsville City Council worker is guilty.
