Kayaker drowns in Brisbane storm drain

Queensland police have warned of the dangers of going into drains and sewers after a kayaker drowned in Brisbane.

The 43-year-old man's body was found underneath the Eagle Street Pier in Brisbane's CBD about 6.30pm on Saturday.

He and a female companion were paddling in the city's underground tunnel network when a storm hit and they were confronted by a wall of water.

The woman survived and raised the alarm about 4pm.

She also unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate her companion.

"Police would like to remind members of the public of the dangers of entering restricted areas such as drains and sewers," a police spokesman said in a statement.

"The environment in these spaces is always volatile and your safety is always at risk."

It's understood the pair had entered the tunnel to take photos some time before the storm struck, bringing heavy rain.
