Melbourne lake tragedy an accident: father

The mother of three children killed when her 4WD ploughed into a lake in Melbourne's west could not have crashed the car on purpose, her partner says.

Akon Guode, 35, returned to her family late on Thursday night after being held in custody and questioned by police over the tragic incident in Wyndham Vale.

One-year-old Bol, his four-year-old sister Anger and her twin brother Maudit all died after being pulled from the car which crashed into Lake Gladman on Wednesday afternoon.

Their five-year-old sister, Awel, was awake but still in a serious condition in the Royal Children's Hospital on Thursday.

The distraught adoptive father of the four children, Joseph Manyang, said he believed Ms Guode did not deliberately drive into the water.

"My message to the community - because there is a lot of talking around, there is untruths - what I can tell them is they have to wait for the report from the police investigation, that will be the truth," Mr Manyang told SBS Radio.

"What I believe is she can't do that (harm the children)... because she loved the kids," he said.

Police say their investigation into the tragic incident was ongoing.

The car has been pulled from the lake and the Major Collisions Unit will examine the vehicle as part of investigations to find out whether the fatal smash was an accident or not.
