Support for Bill Shorten hits record low

Support for Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has fallen to a record low of 27 per cent, despite backing for the ALP rising to a four-month high.

The latest Newspoll conducted by The Australian newspaper shows federal Labor has extended its two-party preferred lead by two percentage points in the last fortnight, with the Opposition now leading 53 per cent to 47 per cent.

Tony Abbott has won back support as preferred prime minister, sitting at 39 per cent compared to Mr Shorten's 36 per cent.
