Bushfire threatens homes in Blue Mountains

Forty homes in the NSW Blue Mountains are under threat as an out-of-control bushfire burns in the area.

More than 100 fire crews along with waterbombing helicopters are working to contain the blaze in Wentworth Falls, NSW RFS inspector Ben Shepherd said on Saturday.

The fire is burning in the area of Hordern Rd, Coronation Rd and Tableland Rd.

There are about 40 homes that back on to bushland in the area.

The fire broke out on Friday night but has picked up over the past few hours because of strengthening winds.

"Wind gusts are likely to strengthen across the course of the day, which could be problematic," Insp Shepherd told AAP.

He said gusts of up to 70km/h were predicted between midday and 3pm.

Access to the blaze is difficult as it has dropped over the cliff escarpment.

An Emergency Alert telephone warning message has been sent to residents in the area.

"If your plan is to leave, or if you are not prepared, consider leaving to family and friends away from the fire affected area," the RFS said.
