NSW beaches closed after shark attack

Beaches up and down the NSW north coast remain closed following a shark attack on a surfer.

Craig Ison was knocked off his board and mauled by a great white during an early-morning surf at Evans Head on Friday.

The 52-year-old underwent surgery for injuries to his left leg and arm at Lismore Base Hospital before being airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital on Saturday morning.

Beaches from Airforce Beach to Chinamans Beach near Evans Head were closed on Saturday after shark sightings and are not expected to reopen until 8am on Sunday.

Police and Surf Life Saving NSW have also asked swimmers and surfers to stay away from beaches between Lennox Head and Ballina's Lighthouse Beach.

The closures will be reassessed on Sunday morning.
