Woman wrongly jailed awarded $2.5m

A woman wrongly jailed has been awarded millions in a payout after successfully suing the Australian state of New South Wales and spending a decade behind bars.

Roseanne Beckett, formerly known as Roseanne Catt, was released from jail in 2001 after serving the majority of her 12-year sentence for soliciting the murder of her former husband, Barry Catt.

Her conviction was quashed in 2005 by the Court of Criminal Appeal after a judicial inquiry into allegations she was framed.

After years of legal arguments, Justice Harrison yesterday awarded her more than $A2.3 million ($NZ2.5 million) plus legal costs.

Ms Beckett, who was in tears after the judgment was handed down, said it was "victory, at long last victory".

"I have been going to bed with it for 26 years," she said.

"I have woken up with it for 26 years. I have had nightmares."
