Improved weather eases WA bushfire threat

A warning of lightning strikes that had been expected to hinder firefighters battling bushfires in Western Australia's Esperance region has been cancelled.

A watch and act warning for people in Myrup and Merivale to the immediate north of Esperance has been downgraded to an advice message.

The 18,000-hectare blaze, which was sparked by lightning, is no longer a threat to lives or homes but is not controlled at its eastern edge.

An advice message also remains in place for the fire at Scaddan in which killed four people were killed and two homes destroyed last week.

That fire is uncontrolled and burning within man-made and natural breaks.

A severe thunderstorm that had been expected didn't eventuate but rain fell in the area on Monday evening, helping firefighting efforts.

But authorities are remaining vigilant, with the chance of storms around Esperance on Tuesday morning.
