A protest will be held in Brisbane in a bid to stop the deportation of asylum seekers to Nauru.
The Anglican Dean of Brisbane, the Very Reverend Dr Peter Catt, will speak at the protest today as he leads an offer by at least 10 churches to protect some of the 267 people who face being return to Nauru.
Dr Catt says authorities will have to bash down his St John's Cathedral doors to get to the asylum seekers who take up the Anglican church's offer of sanctuary.
The protest will be held outside the Department of Immigration and Citizenship office in Brisbane.
Hundreds have confirmed their attendance on a Facebook event to protest against Immigration Minister Peter Dutton's "threat to send 72 children back to Nauru".
"Preventing the transfer of these 72 children back to Nauru needs to be the first step to closing all of Australia's detention hellholes forever," the page says.
The protest comes days after a High Court ruling validating Australia's offshore detention regime, which has paved the way for asylum seekers who came to Australia for health reasons, and Australian-born babies, to be deported back to the island.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has told parliament the government was aiming to get all children out of detention, but has declined to say many caught up in the High Court decision would remain in Australia.
The Greens had pushed to stop the deportation of the 267 asylum seekers, but were defeated when Labor voted with the Turnbull government.
