Terror-boat suspects remain in custody

Five men accused of hatching a plan to join Islamic State after leaving Australia by boat will remain in custody as federal police continue to investigate the allegations.

The men, including Islamic preacher Musa Cerantonio, were arrested in Cape York on Tuesday after towing a seven-metre boat from Victoria to far north Queensland.

While suspects can only be held for 24 hours without charge, Australian Federal Police (AFP) yesterday successfully applied in a Cairns court for the men to be held in detention for an extended period under "specified time" provisions of the Crimes Act.

A spokeswoman said police would not be providing details of the length of time granted.

However, the legislation allows for a period of up to one week.
