Leaders head to key battleground

Opposition leader Bill Shorten will campaign in Sydney's south today in a bid to win back old territory as the government tries to paint Labor as reckless with the nation's finances.

Mr Shorten is headed to the marginal Liberal-held seat of Banks to campaign against the coalition's cuts to health.

Labor had held the seat for 64 years - since it was created in 1949 - before it was snagged up by the coalition in 2013 with a margin of just 2.8%.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will also be campaigning in Sydney today, starting the day with a radio interview with shock jock Alan Jones.

The coalition is expected to continue its attack on Labor's budget management after announcing a $A1.1 billion ($NZ1.15 billion) improvement to the budget bottom line over four years, partly achieved by a crackdown on welfare cheats.

Labor's deficits by contrast will be $A16.5 billion higher.

"Labor's announced a worsening of the budget at the worst possible time, which is the uncertainty and volatility we have in global financial and economic circumstances today," Treasurer Scott Morrison told the ABC's 7.30 Report.
