Three Dunedin-based weightlifters competed in the South
Island weightlifting champs, held in Christchurch on July 17
- Jacob Matthews, Jono Tripp and Douglas Sekone-Fraser.
Matthews, a novice to the sport, showed great form in the
85kg class, lifting two personal bests of 95kg in the snatch
and 115kg in the clean and jerk. This was enough to win him
the silver medal in the 85kg catagory.
Tripp managed to snatch 77kg and 95kgs in the clean and jerk.
Tripp was also in the 85kg class.
Sekone-Fraser had a great day in the 77kg class, impressing
the crowd with a 105kg snatch and a 130kg clean and jerk.
This was enough for Sekone-Fraser to pick the gold medal in
his weght division, but and the award for best lifter at the
South Island championship.
