The Moro Marathon and Half-Marathon took place yesterday,
Sunday 13th September, with a spectacular turn out. There was
an amazing buzz in the air at the start of the half -
marathon and the crowd were ready to put the events of the
undie 500 behind them and show the rest of New Zealand what
Dunedin was really about.
What was great to see and should be recognised, is the
student participation in the race. Otago Polytech Student
Marc Russell stayed in all weekend and did not participate in
any of the trouble associated with the Undie 500. Instead he
spent the weekend preparing to run the half- marathon dressed
as a banana on behalf of charity.
Unfortunately he missed out on the prize for best dressed,
losing to an Otago University student who was dressed as a
Gorrila. Slightly ironic.
I believe it is important to recognise that out of the
something 20,000 students in Dunedin many are not out there
causing trouble and bringing a bad name to the city. How
about we stop giving publicity to the students who do nothing
to deserve it and start recognising the students who work
hard and give back to the community.
