Danny Lee had a horror start to the British Open overnight, carding a 78 seven-over-par at Royal Troon, Scotland.

After being one-under-par nine holes in, Lee capitulated, with five bogeys and a triple bogey - on the 11th - seeing him drop eight shots.

He finished the day tied for 148th, with only four others below him.

Meanwhile fellow Kiwi Steve Alker is tied for 94th, having finished the opening round at two-under-par.

The Kiwi has a long way to go to catch up, as Phil Mickelson streaked out to eight-under-par, equalling the lowest score ever in a sinlge round in a major tournament.
