They came, they saw, they collected - all in the name of
Jesus.
As part of the fifth annual Jesus Week, volunteers from the
University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic, armed with 40
empty rubbish bags and wearing rubber gloves, headed to the
student area on a mission.
Discarded beer bottles and the remnants of last night's
takeaways were no match for the eight street cleaning
volunteers intent on providing "Christian service" to their
community, University chaplain the Rev Greg Hughson said.
An opening service and the clean-up marked the beginning of
Jesus Week, during which members of the Otago Combined
Christian Groups celebrate their faith by holding a variety
of events, he said.
Beginning in Castle St, the volunteers filled all of the
40-litre bags, which were supplied by the Dunedin City
Council, in just under two hours.
Mr Hughson said students had expressed their gratitude for
the clean-up.
