The annual clocktower race went off with a chime and a
squeal of excitement at noon yesterday.
Beating the tower's noon chimes was the goal, and before the
race started there was talk in the crowd about how it "must
be impossible" to do.
However, not one but two competitors managed the feat, with
winner Chris Weddell (22) coming in at 50.87 seconds and
Chris McLean (19) coming in at 52.28 seconds.
Matt Gibbons (19) came third in 53.06 seconds.
Mr Weddell had no plan of attack before the race other than
watching how others would run.
It was the first time he had raced and he thought it would be
worth a try.
