a concert at Marama Hall yesterday. Photo by Craig Baxter.
Playing David Bowie's Rebel, Rebel as an opening number
for a concert packed with University of Otago music students
may have been seen by some as being a little provocative, if
not ironic.
Despite Dr Glam (aka University of Otago contemporary music
lecturer Ian Chapman) delivering the lyrics dressed in
glam-rock gold with silver face paint and wild hair, there
were no mosh pits or body surfers to be seen anywhere. The
students remained surprisingly docile in the Marama Concert
Hall.
But there was no doubting after his set with music department
guitar teaching fellow Dave Horizon and second year
performance students Pania Simmonds (bass guitar) and Rachel
Trainor (drums) that everyone in the 230-strong audience had
been "glamorised".
One student, who wanted to remain anonymous, was heard to
say: "It's not often you get to see your music lecturer in
Lycra . . . mmm".
The concert was to welcome new and returning music students,
and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of David Bowie's entry
to the music charts with Space Oddity.
In a bid to showcase the diversity of the music department,
the concert was also seasoned with performances by the
University's Gamelan Orchestra and second year cello student
Jono Squires.
