It may be a student community, but not everyone in the North
Dunedin area is a student and burglars target the area
looking for insecure property.
Campus Constable Max Holt encouraged students to take "simple
precautions" to discourage burglars to keep their flats safe.
"Locking windows and doors is a really good start."
If a flat was secure, an offender would be more likely to
move on to find an insecure place, he said.
Keeping a detailed list of valuable items, including the
model and serial number of electrical goods, was useful in
case a burglary occurred.
It was important to be aware burglaries happened just as
frequently during daylight hours as at night and any
suspicious behaviour should be reported to the police, Const
Holt said.
Taking note of people or vehicles which looked out of place
in the area would enable police to "clamp down" on thefts.
"Be cautious 100% of the time," he warned.
