Bus fares in Dunedin

I have recently started using Dunedin's bus services, and have noticed that the $5.00 cost of purchasing the Otago Regional Council GO-CARD is not actually listed on their DCC bus information website.

Given that one has to make quite a few bus trips to redeem the $5.00 cost, I think this is a little misleading.

I also note that the website states that a "25% discount off the adult cash fare is available only to beneficiaries using GO-CARD", however a phone call to the ORC has confirmed that this is not available to all beneficiaries, but to those with an Invalid card only.

Again, I find this misleading. If the DCC wants to encourage commuters to utilise the bus services, then maybe the fares system needs to be looked at.

Indeed

Indeed. And here's the figures for those that doubt a car is dearer than a Dunedin bus:

Bus:
Fare (leg 1): $3.10 (casual), $2.79 (GoCard)
Fare (leg 2): $1.90 (casual), $1.71 (GoCard)
Total weekly cost $45 (GoCard)

Car:
Petrol: 4.7km at 12km/litre = 3.91 litres per week, $7.10
Registration/insurance: $4.42 + $2.10
WOF/running costs: $1.78
Parking: $16
Total weekly cost $31.40

Car is usually cheaper

Yes Baxter. When you already own a car, the less you use it the more expensive each kilometre is, because of the fixed charges of registration, w.o.f, insurance and depreciation.
It takes a lot of parking and maintenance costs to take car use up to the cost of using the bus service.

Just use a car

I've given up on Dunedin buses. It is in fact cheaper to use my car (even with insurance, parking, maintenance, etc, costs added in).
