Cave Rave - community not listened to

I am disappointed with the DCC’s decision to consent to the concert at Long Beach. The concert sounds great but it is located in the wrong place.

What does a community have to do to be heard? Over years, I have watched (and sometimes participated with) the community at Long Beach as they plan, plant out, and care for their beach environment and its surroundings.

They have done a great job and the DCC has helped fund their efforts. So I fail to see how they can now approve an event that has the potential to damage all the hard work that has been done.

For those who don't know Long Beach, imagine 1000 people driving along a narrow winding road currently undergoing road works, parking on a quite fragile domain, tramping to the beach along a limited number of narrow paths, and drinking.

Moreover, the wildlife is going to be removed for the evening.

This is a poor decision. There are so very many better locations for a concert like this in the Dunedin area.

Thoughts

Events like these shouldnt be stopped based on excuses by people who dont want to be involved in activities that dont interest them. I agree we dont want to cause damage to the environment and current works at long beach. But it's not the event itself that will cause this - it's the overall oranisation of it.

Stopping the event altogether is the easy way out. I'm imagining 1000 people having a great time at a great venue at a well-organised event. Build a bridge, and get over it.
