Sadly the massive expenditure commitment by the DCC to build
Awatea St Stadium has removed all possibility of any such
underwriting. We just can't afford it. Such lost opportunity
is part of the "opportunity costs" that so many opponents of
the Stadium cited. It is sad because underwriting may be the
only way that improved domestic and international flights
will happen.

User pays ... You want it - you pay for it. Perhaps students
won't come here if there are no flights? Yes, that would be a
good thing. If you want the services, you pay for them. Air
NZ should not have to subsidise Dunedin fat cats.
Clearly the downturn in the economy, has affected the number
of passengers and for the council to underwrite this, would
be foolhardy. Since fewer people are flying, it would be
paying Air NZ to fly planes that have not been fully booked
and is that not going to be on par with the Stadium? Too many
empty seats and loss making issues.
