Should the city consider a 'managed retreat' from South Dunedin?

Managed retreat from South Dunedin

I'm a bit confused thanks to the ODT.  I thought the issue was with Ocean Beach and managing erosion that could affect a few properties along the coastline and that is what the consultation and subsequent hearings were about.  Since when was it ever mentioned in the proposal/consultation that the whole of South Dunedin was going to be inundated?

I really think the ODT need to check their reporting on this issue - also, the way this poll is named "should the city consider a 'managed retreat' from South Dunedin" makes it sound like the city is actually going to take two steps back from South Dunedin so the City has nothing to do with the area.  Shouldn't the poll be asking something like "should there be a managed retreat from the erosion taking place at the Ocean Beach domain"?

Therefore, I'm not going to vote in this poll due to the mis-wording and mis-management by the ODT of this whole subject.

Beach

Well if Holland had that attitude it wouldn't be there now. At least Oamaru has enough guts to save its town. Most of the flat land in this city is reclaimed land. From George Street and Princes Street to the harbour and to St Kilda the vast majority is reclaimed. Go and read the history of Dunedin including St Kilda then let the sea come in.

South Dunedin

It is extremely short-sighted to think the problem can be engineered. If a wall is built, as is seen in so many places, it will result in further erosion nearby. Wall-building in Tauranga Harbour has resulted in the loss of the nearby beach. There are many other examples. Sure the engineers will keep telling council to build more structures, as they'll get paid lots.

Whilst current councillors may think it unpalatable politically to begin the retreat, they must not merely worry about sportspeople's opposition and the next election; they must instead worry about the longer term, take responsibility now and manage a retreat.

Congratulations to the engineer & DOC who have spoken out and tried to bring some (uncommon) common sense to the situation.
